QUOTES FROM YOUTH PARTICIPANTS
IN CCY PROGRAMS

Journey - Coming ofAge

Journey - Coming of Age in Today's World:
"This trip has brought out a part of me I never knew was there. It’s the ability to love people and all other things and to get it in my head that the whole world does not suck. I’ve got to know people I’m here with a little better, and I love them all. They are all really special and they are all 100% perfect in a way. I feel like I came up here a rusty dirty piece of scrap metal, but now I feel like I’ve been recycled."       9th grade Journey student

Focus on the Future:

(Focus is an extended day program for first offender youth sponsored jointly by Chico Unified School District and Butte County Probation. Focus uses the Journey curriculum).

"I have learned that I am responsible for my own actions. I have also learned that there are different ways to handle my problems instead of using drugs or being violent."                          11th grade Focus student

"My life has changed lot because I put the gang-related part of me to the side and that was very hard for me, but I learned to make the right decision."                                                          10th grade Focus student

"Focus on the Future has helped me realize that problems don't just go away, they need to be addressed and it takes acknowledgment and a commitment to solving the problem to make it go away. I have changed in that I now know when to ask for help and that I can rely on certain people for that help ... I took those weaknesses and turned them into strengths ... I came to see that trust is hard, but worth the results. I learned that talking about my problems begins the process of helping so that healing can take place."                                      12th grade Focus student

" I've learned a lot about myself, about integrity and about introspection ... how to look at myself, and of course I did not like what I saw. I know I had to make some heavy changes and fast, not only for me but also for my family, and for my grandmother."                        11th grade Focus student

I have now grown more mature and have much more wisdom. I have learned how to control my emotions ... before I react in an unnecessary manner."                                                               11th grade Focus student

Every Youth Included:
"I enjoyed participating in Every Youth Included...because of the diversity, most would think so many groups could not mix...it mixed very well, it was a fun environment." 14 year-old EYI participant

What are the most important things you have learned from the program?
I think it helped me not to be scared to say my feelings and problems.
How to be patient. Goal orientation.
I learned how to discuss certain topics and to consider the opinions of others.
I realized qualities about myself that I didn’t know I had.
Friendship and how to behave, and to shut up when other people are talking.
Awareness on everything… So I know now.
